I often hear from business owners. I want to step back. I don’t have anyone I can trust fully to run the business. Mai kya karu. Welcome to my talk series Mai Kya karu. Specially recorded for you business owners. I am Nalin Mehta and today we will talk about how to build strong second line of leadership in a family run business. In family businesses, growth often depends on the founder or the MD. But relying solely on one person creates a bottleneck and limits the future of the business. Building a second line therefore is not just about giving titles. It is about developing capability and trust. The first step is to identify potential leaders early. Look for peoples who understand the business. Importantly, share the values and are willing to take responsibility. They don’t have to be family members, but they must be committed to the long-term vision. Next, focus on structured mentoring and skill development. Give them clear responsibilities. Expose them to different parts of the business and guide them through decision-making challenges. Allow them to make mistakes so that they learn and grow while you are providing all the support. Finally, create a decision framework and accountability system. Let them make decisions within defined boundaries and track outcomes. This builds confidence for both you and them. Over time, you will have people who can manage operations and take strategic decisions without you being involved in every detail. Building a second line of leadership is about patience and consistency. It doesn’t happen overnight. But taking these steps ensures the business can grow beyond a single person. So if you want to step back without risking the business, start by identifying potential leaders, mentoring them and giving them real responsibility. I hope this helps.
